Yash Chopra’s warning to Bollywood

The chairman of the entertainment committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), Yash Chopra, interacted with business chambers nd stressed that it has become a need for film industry players go corporate or get gobbled as larger global companies are going to march into Indian film industry.

According to Mr. Chopra, the Rs 8,000-crore-plus Indian film industry, which churns out over a 1,000 films a year is now attracting the foreign entertainment behemoths like Walt Disney Inc of the US and Australian industrialist Kerry Packer.

Mr. Chopra told Newsline, “Making one film in three years is not viable any more. I have five films ready to release in 2007 and plan to release eight films in 2008 and 10 films in 2009 under the Yash Raj banner,”. At an interaction with the Bharat Chamber of Commerce Mr. Chopra said, “India has the highest number of billionaires, who can hold the reins of the Indian film industry to match global trends”.

Yash Chopra, the most experienced director-producer of Bollywood has been running his own company since 1970. Yash Raj Films of Mr. Chopra has produced a chain of hits like Dhoom, Dhoom 2, Bunty Aur Babli, Daag, Deewar and Lamhe etc.

Shilpa Shetty, Indian actress, said she was serious to put the Celebrity Big Brother race row behind her as she met Britain's Queen Elizabeth II at a Commonwealth Day.

The famous Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty was subjected to racist abuse from the contestants in British reality television show Celebrity Big Brother in January.

Mallika Sherawat has leading role in Hollywood film

Mallika Sherawat has signed for Hollywood film "Unveiled" to be directed by Bill Bannerman. It is a ‘once-in-a-lifetime opportunity' for her.

Mallika looked remarkable at a Mumbai press event on March 10 to announce Unveiled.

Mallika Sherawat also won a small role in a Jackie Chan movie, The Myth

Bannerman is impressed by acting of Mallika Sherawat in 'Murder' and feel that she will do justice to the role in his film ‘Unveiled’.

According to Bannerman 'Unveiled' is a film about a Muslim woman having two husbands and a lover. It is the first Hollywood film to feature a female Muslim central character.Bannerman has been honoured by the Director's Guild of America as the best assistant director for "Unforgiven".

Devika Rani

Undoubtedly Devika Rani will be ever remembered for her contribution to Indian Cinema as well as for her truly a great beauty.

The birth of Devika Rani, the first film actress of India, took place in Waltaire (Vishakhapatnam). She was the grandniece of Rabindranath Tagore, the famous poet honored with the Noble prize. Col. M.N. Chaudhari, the first Indian Surgeon-General of Madras (new name Chennai), was her father and her mother's name was Mrs. Leela Chaudhari.

After completing her school education in early 1920s, she joined Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and the Royal Academy of Music in London to study drama. She also won scholarships there. She also studied architecture, textile and decor design, and apprenticed under Elizabeth Arden.

During the study period Devika Rani met with Himanshu Rai. He appointed her as set designer for his first production ‘Light of Asia’ (1925). They got married in 1929. Mr. got accepted the offer to make ‘A Throw of Dice’ (1929) in collaboration with Germany's famous UFA Studio. For this purpose they had to left for Germany.

Seventh July
Eighteen Eighty Six is a memorable day in the history of Indian
Cinema. On that day, at the Watkins
Hotel in Bombay, six short films of the Lumiére brothers were shown.

After this Hiralal Sen and H.S. Bhatavdekar started making short films, similar
as made by the Lumiére brothers, in Calcutta and Bombay, respectively.
Mr. Bhatavdekar made the first short film of Indian Cinema in 1899.
Dada Saheb Phalke, saw the film ‘The Life Of Christ’ when he was on a
trip to London. Inspired by this
film he made the first Indian feature film “Raja Harishchandra” in 1913.
The film was very much liked and appreciated by the public.
Dada Saheb Phalke became the Father of Indian Cinema. This was the start of Indian cinema.
Thereafter Indian film industry developed very fast.

India’s one of the first film studios was ‘Bombay
Talkies’, run by Himanshu Rai (producer) and Devika Rani (actress) got much
success. That was the age of silent
movies.

Techniques for adding sound to cinema came to Indian Cinema.

Alam Ara is the first Indian talkie film produced by Imperial Film Company.
The director Arde Shir Irani added song and dance to the film story. ‘Alam Ara’ was released on 14^th March,
1931. In 1933 the film ‘Karma’
became hit film and Devika Rani
became first (female) film star.

The expression of the subject matter of films became more and more powerful due to insertion of sound. Filmmakers started to include Dance and songs in their movies to make them more entertaining. As a result films became very much popular in the country.

Different types of movies were made in different ages as per the taste of people of that age. In the starting era mythological films acquired much popularity.
